DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

From around 2016 through 2022, I had an addiction to Twitter.

It shaped my beliefs, it morphed my sense of humor, it dictated my taste in art, and influenced my personality. I basically downloaded my identity from Twitter. It also had an adverse effect on my mental health and overall worldview. On this website, engagement metrics defined human morality. On this website, I became less discerning and more impulsive.

In May 2020, I finished the first draft of this film. It started as a challenge to write a film that I could shoot in a single day with the tiniest cast and crew possible, but eventually it morphed into an exploration of perverted justice, and a character who’s morality was defined by impulse, an impulse mutated by an unhealthy relationship with the internet.

In early October 2022, with the support of my amazing partner, I finally left Twitter. A week later, Twitter was sold to a volatile billionaire, and at the turn of the new year, SCREENS entered pre-production.

I will be forever grateful to the cast and crew who all helped bring this weird little exercise to life. But honestly, weaning off the internet is probably why this film now exists beyond the page.
